What Size Bat for 7 Year Old Coach Pitch

Last Updated: September 30, 2022 by Darron

A right bat can change the fate of the game when in the hands of the right player. Initially, the training should be done using the correct gear. Players who are equipped accurately at the beginning have better scope to perform well later in their career.

A coach pitch bat in the early years can drastically change the outcomes of the practice session because it makes the player bold and confident with the moves.

After reading this article, you will understand why it is necessary and what size bat for a 7-year-old coach pitch can make the difference.

What is a Coach Pitch Bat?

A coach pitch bat appears no different from a normal bat but it contains many benefits for the young players. These bats are baseball bats that have large barrels with a lighter weight and shorter size. They are ideally made for young players of age 8 and below.

Because of their barrel size, another name used for the coach pitch bat is the junior big barrel bat. The barrel has 2 5/8 inch or 2 ¾ diameters. These bats have a drop weight of -10, -11, or -12.

These bats are intentionally made lightly weighted so a young player can learn how to swing the bat perfectly. The handling is made easier for little hands to understand every tactic of hitting the ball.

With their lighter weight and optimal designs, young lads can swing the bat with all their power without hurting their muscles.

Coach pitch is basically a program for the kids ages 7 and 8 to advance their fundamental skills. It is for baseball and softball both. During this program, the coaches deliver the pitches and not their teammates or other young players. Facing the mature delivery improves the skills overall and makes the players more competitive.

What size bat for a 7-year-old coach pitch?

Choosing the optimal size of a bat for a 7 years old is highly essential than anything else. What brand to go for, or what design appears more appealing, all are secondary things. If the size is right, bat handling is trouble-free.

A coach pitch bat helps the player to learn the right way of bat swinging. Thanks to its lower weight, the young batter can easily learn to make use of their power.

An ideal coach pitch allows the player to hit the ball again and again without the feeling of tiredness.

The barrel size is extended to increase the chance of contact, but the weight should remain in check. Young players cannot lift the heavier bat and it will lower their swing speed. When they are in the learning stage, their swing speed must not be compromised. The size must be selected in such a way that the player can spin the bat forcefully without putting much effort.

The 2 ¾ or 2 5/8 Barrel?

As it is mentioned earlier that there are two barrel sizes offered for junior big barrel bat: 2 ¾ and 2 5/8. When it comes to this selection, you must follow the league’s guidelines. In some leagues, 2 ¾ is enough while for others 2 5/8 could do the job. Yet again, the barrel must also be lighter in weight and should not be boosting the bat’s overall weight. The loaded barrels are not ideal because they will make it harder for the batter to swing the bat.

The Right Size?

If you are searching for the ideal bat size for a 7-year old then going for the size 27/17 appears to be most appropriate. It is considered to be a perfect size for managing weight and size.

However, the size selection mainly depends on the size of the players. Depending on their size, they may also go for 28/ 18 or 26/16. No single size can be considered to be ideal because the strength and swinging abilities vary from one player to another. So, the only necessary thing at this stage is that the young player must not get tired while holding the bat and swinging it with all their might.

Therefore, along with the size of the bat, the size of the player matters as well.

When it comes to the height while selecting the bat, the player’s height must be measured with the shoes. The player must be wearing baseball shoes because while playing the match, the batter will have the shoes on, and selecting the length longer or shorter will hinder the gameplay.

Other than height, weight plays a major role as well. A lean young baseball player must go for the lightest possible version, while a bit heavier player can opt for mid-range versions. A thin player may not be able to handle a bat that is heavier and longer. So, for any player who is less than 60 lbs., the bat’s length of 26 to 29 inches can be sufficient. Similarly, children having weights between 70 and 90 lbs. can go for a bat length of 28 to 32 inches.

As for the height, the young players who have a height between 3 ft. and 3 ft. and 4 inches can use the bat of 26 inches bat. Basically, it is the ideal length to initiate with. However, with every 4-inch increase in height, add one inch for the bat’s height.

Final Verdict

When you are selecting the bat for the young players, you need to be very careful with size. Choosing the bad size can entirely change the fate of the game.

For the young player, many parents tend to go for a size a bit bigger because they think that the children will eventually grow into it. But that’s not beneficial at all.  Selecting the correct bat size helps the young player to learn in the most efficient manner. It helps them to master new tricks easily. Also, it doesn’t tire them instantly. On the other hand, the wrong size can make the child suffer and burden them during the game. So if you want a child super-star, then going for the right bat size with the right training is the only option.
